Total Solar Eclipse Ends In America

Image
The Great American Eclipse completed its journey across the United States Monday, with the path of totality stretching coast-to-coast for the first time in nearly a century. Totality began over Oregon at about 1716 GMT and ended at 1848 GMT over Charleston, South Carolina where sky-gazers whooped and cheered as the Moon moved directly in front of the Sun. “It was incredibly beautiful. I am moved to tears,” said Heather Riser, sitting on a blanket in Waterfront Park in Charleston, a bustling East Coast city where thousands had gathered to watch. Federal Allocations To State Governments Fell 40% In Half Year 2017

Image
Nigeria’s thirty-six state governments received N2.7 trillion out of N4.7 trillion of their budgeted allocation in the first half of 2017. This translates to 40.7 percent lower than their expectation this year. “The volatility nature of disbursements to all tiers of government in the first half of 2017 would suggest difficulty in implementing budgets at Federal, States and Local government levels,” said the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative quarterly review. The organisation further said, “The volatility in revenue inflows will adversely affect planning and expenditure of government and thus likely hamper efforts at stimulating growth and development.” The impact is already being felt across the states where lack of funds has led to postponement of projects, debts to civil servants and non-payment of salaries to teachers. In Kogi State, the House of Assembly was forced to summon the Head of Service last month over non payment of salaries to civil serv

A Presidency official told newsmen who were waiting for the President’s arrival that he would be working from home for now, as his office was undergoing renovation. In response to the president’s return and resumption of duty, stocks at the Nigerian Stock Exchange struggled for traction at the start of trading week, as discussions centred around the direction of the economy, following the President’s return from medical vacation. President Buhari yesterday delivered his first televised speech since returning home aft

Meet Ooni Of Ife’s Sisters Who Ensured The Emergence Of A New Queen

Image
There is no love-lost among them and Olori Wuraola. The three, Princess Folashade, Princess Adesola and Princess Bimpe are sisters to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi. Known to always appear with the monarch to most places he went especially when he was newly installed, there is obviously a supremacy battle among them and Olori Wuraola, who was the only wife and queen in the palace. As expected, Olori Wuraola put them in their place and this ignited a silent war. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, formally took for wife, former Wuraola Itohan Sonia Otiti Zainab Obanor on March 12, 2016. Initially all seems to be well with the queen and her in-laws but everything turned awry with what a source described as “the attitude of Olori Wuraola towards family members.” According to a report from TheCapital.ng that broke the alleged crash of the Ooni of Ife/Olori Wuraola’s marriage, one of the reasons for the challenged union is the fact that the queen is at war

Nigeria To End Open Drugs Market In 2018

Image
The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, on Saturday said the Federal Government was determined to stop the sale of drugs in open markets in the country at the end of 2018. Adewole made this known when he visited the site for the construction of a Pharmaceutical Coordinated Wholesale Centre at Oba, near Onitsha in Anambra. The Federal Government had announced July 31, 2017 as the deadline to end the sale of drugs in open markets. “May be people still believe that the Federal Government is joking, government does not joke. “We do not want fake drugs or falsified labels; we just want genuine drugs and the only way to do so is centralizing the drug market so that we can determine what comes in and what goes out. “We have agreed to extend the deadline till Dec. 31, 2018 and that will be the last extension. We are irrevocably committed. “By Jan. 1, 2019, if you are not here at the coordinated centre, then you cannot be anywhere. I am saying it with all seriousness that this

Usain Bolt Pulls Up Injured In Final Championship Race

Image
Usain Bolt’s final appearance on the track ended in agony on Saturday as he pulled up injured running the final leg of the World Championships 4×100 metres relay as Britain beat the United States for a shock gold medal. Bolt, who had to settle for bronze in the individual 100 metres, had been hoping to sign off from the sport by leading Jamaica to a fifth successive relay gold but they were already struggling in third when he collected the baton. As he tried to gain ground, Bolt pulled up and fell to the floor with what looked like a hamstring injury. A brilliantly executed race by Chijindu Ujah, Adam Gemili, Danny Talbot and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake gave Britain gold in 37.47 seconds, the best time in the world this year, pushing the United States, with individual gold and silver medallists Justin Gatlin and Christian Coleman running the second and fourth legs, into silver in 37.52 with Japan third in 38.04.
