Eyewitness: It was chaos. Tourists were panicking
Alan Parry was on his way to the Houses of Parliament to meet Norman Tebbit -- a member of the House of Lords who was injured in the IRA's Brighton bombing in 1984 -- when the attack unfolded in front of him. He said at first he thought a passing motorist had had a tire blowout. "I was walking along among a crowd of people, and heard a crash and bang. I looked across [to the other side of the pavement] and saw this 4x4 vehicle that had crashed into the railings that separate the pavement from the Houses of Parliament.
"I saw a guy who appeared to be the driver get out and race away. I walked a few more paces and I saw someone lying on the pavement injured, that was quickly followed by three gun shots.
"The next thing, of course, was chaos. Tourists were panicking, shouting 'Oh my God,' and running in all directions.
"Then the police arrived, including armed police, and were telling everyone to clear away."He added:
"I feel a very lucky person -- had I crossed over to the opposite pavement, who knows what would have happened."
